I’m Jerry Smith, a California artist and photographer. For most of my life, art waited patiently in the background. Retirement finally gave it the front seat.
Portraiture in oils is the heart of my work. I’m drawn to faces, to light and character, and to the stories people carry with them. Expression, posture, color and even the quiet details can reveal personality and emotion in ways that words sometimes cannot.

I paint from photographs, and my years behind a camera shape how I see a portrait: the turn of a head, where the light falls, the moment a smile becomes real. Each painting is built slowly in layers, from a toned underpainting to the final touches of color.
I’m always learning. I study the methods and techniques that have made painted portraits compelling for centuries, and I’m not above using modern tools to check my drawing against the reference before I correct the painting.

A portrait is a gift that lasts for generations. If you have someone in mind, a family member, a friend, or someone you’ve lost, I’d be glad to hear about it.
After all, I retired to create.
